The beloved Manitou Incline closes Saturday morning – in time for the Pikes Peak Ascent on Saturday and the Marathon on Sunday – and will stay closed about four months for repairs. In a $2 million project, workers will stabilize the uppermost segment of the old cog railway, where lumber ties are loose or missing and broken culverts jut from the eroded ground. That work will complete a $5 million, four-year repairs effort on the mountainside stair-stepper, which gains more than 2,000 feet in less than a mile. Some of the money will be reimbursed by the disaster recovery grant program, part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant.
